Alison Hems

Alison is a reputable leader in museums and heritage, and the wider cultural and education sectors. As General Secretary for the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS-UK) her task is to lead the organisation’s work in promoting an appreciation and understanding of cultural heritage in the UK and worldwide.

Prior to her appointment to this role in February 2025, Alison was Head of the School of Writing, Publishing and the Humanities at Bath Spa University. One of many successes was her ‘whole School’ approach to the ‘applied’ humanities, resulting in the launch of humanities for … 

As a Visiting Research Fellow (VRF), Alison is supporting humanities for … in making the case for the Humanities. She is a guest speaker and lecturer, bringing both her sector knowledge and visionary leadership to bear. She will extend connections between Bath Spa and the heritage sector in Bath and the region, and beyond.
